LET’S GET STARTED

Hello everyone, my name is Kendall Pulaski and I’m from Dallas, Texas. I’m a sophomore here at Texas State and I’m majoring in Electronic Media with a concentration in Sports Media. I’m hoping to become a Sports Reporter for ESPN or Fox News. (Basically I have a dream to become the next Erin Andrews.) I have a love for sports and I grew up around a lot of Sunday football. During my free time I love to hang out with friends and do just about anything outside.

One of my favoritie hobbies is trying new foods and resturaunts. I am the absolute definition of a foodie! Growing up it felt like my mom was always in the kitchen making new things. There was no space in my house for picky eaters. My love for food came from my mom, because she was always introducing me to different foods. Trying out new food and recipes has become such a great way for my mom and I to bond over the years. Even though I’m far away from home, I know I’ll always have a mother-daughter lunch date waiting for me when I come to visit!

In my blog I will give food reviews from resturaunts I’ve never tried before. I hope to explore and find resturaunts from Austin all the way to San Antonio and everywhere in between. Some other elements I may include in my posts are Youtube Videos for a better visual, and Google Maps so you can see exactly where these resturaunts are located. I’m so excited to bring you all along on this journey with me and I hope I can encourage you all to try something new!

My App: Food Reviewers

Graphic made by Kendall Pulaski

My app is for all my fellow foodies out there 🙂 It’s called “Food Reviewers.” It allows you to leave reviews for resturaunts or look for reviews before trying a place out.

The app will allow you to rate resturaunts, leave comments or questions for the owners, and communicate with other people about the resturaunt. This will help solve any questions people have before actually going to the resturaunt. People would want to use my app because it will save them time and give them an idea of what to expect.

There is different categories such as deserts, coffee shops, or different types of food. The app can use your phones current location, so it will suggest places near you.

I hope you enjoyed my idea for my app and the design of it 🙂

Grins

Grins is a staple resturaunt to San Marcos. It’s the perfect resturant for those who are visiting. Grins was the first place I tried when visiting Texas State and I loved the atmosphere and the food!

Turkey Bacon Sandwich with Brocoli Cheese Soup
Photo from Grin’s Facebook

It is in a prime location only a short drive off of campus. It is located at 802 North LBJ. Grins has a large menu with many different choices. The pricing is really affordable and they do happy hour as well! Everything that I have had from Grins has been amazing. The service is always fast and the food is quality.

Grins has A LOT of pros! The location is amazing, they are open seven days a week, the pricing is affordable, and the resturaunt itself looks like a treehouse which is super awesome! The only con I can think of is that it can get crowded during rush hours.

My reccomendation: The chicken fried steak from Grin’s is the absolute BEST! The breading is crispy and the gravy is delicious. I reccomended this to any chicken fried steak lovers 🙂 Here is their website to see other menu items!

Thanks for reading, leave any questions or comments you have for me I’d love to answer!

CRAFThouse Kitchen & Tap

I spend a lot of my time at Crafthouse. Whether it’s on Thursday for karaoke night or we are watching a football game on Sunday, my friends and I love to hang out there. We go to brunch often on the weekends, because we have a lot of friends who serve there. Crafthouse is an awesome hang out for college students with a fun atmosphere.

Crafthouse is located in the best spot in San Marcos; the square! The square is such a fun place to hangout, especially when the weather is nice outside. Crafthouse has an awesome patio seating that lets you take in the sights and sounds of San Marcos. They have such a wide variety of menu items and everything I have had from there has been delicious. Their prices are also pretty affordable for college students. In addition, their service is very quick and there is always a lot of staff working. My food has always been fresh and I’ve never had any problems.

Some cons of Crafthouse would be it can get pretty packed on nights of big games so it can be hard to get a table. In addition, parking on the square in general can be a pain especially on the weekends. Some pros would be they have live music every night. They have a lot of TV’s playing the latest games and every Thursday night is karaoke night which is so much fun to watch! The patio is one of the best parts of Crafthouse because it overlooks the square.

Ahi Tuna Street Tacos

My reccomendation: The Ahi Tuna Street Tacos. They are sooo delicious. I like them because they are light, but will still fill you up and leave you satisfied. I would definitely reccomend these tacos to anyone who likes ahi tuna! Here is the menu if you want to look at other options or pricing.

I hope you enjoyed my video and blog that shows you what Crafthouse is all about! Let me know if you go, what you order on the menu 🙂 Kendall

Umami Sushi

Umami was another one of the first sushi places I tried when I came to Texas State. Sushi is my absolute favorite type of food so it makes sense that was looking for the best places around San Marcos. I always ate sushi at home with my family, so I knew I had to find a place at school that I enjoyed.

Umami is located at 700 N LBJ dr. This location is a prime spot in San Marcos, because it is within walking distance from the campus. This brings in a lot of students, especially those who live in dorms. The pricing is a little more upward in comparison to the other sushi places in San Marcos, but it is also nicer and newer than the others. The rolls range anywhere between a regular California Roll for $6 or the El Diablo for $18. They also have other items on their menu such as gyoza, miso soup, tempura, poke bowls, and other entrees. I’ve gone to Umami twice and the service was very quick, efficient, and good quality.

Some cons to Umami is that they don’t do an all-you-can-eat deal like the other sushi restuaruants in the area. Another would be that they close for 2 hours between lunch and dinner. One pro would be the location. Another is that they deliver with DoorDash. They also have fresh, quality sushi. They have a diverse menu that is not only rolls, but many other things too.

Bob Cat Roll

My reccomendation: The Bobcat roll is absolutely delious! It’s filled with spicy crab and avocado and topped with tuna, spicy mayo, eel sauce… and hot Cheetos! It’s spicy and crunchy at the same time and gives it an amazing taste. I would definitely reccomend this roll to any sushi lover!

I hope this post gave you another new spot to try out in San Marcos. For more information on their menu and pricing you can click here. Let me know if you try it out 🙂

Sakura Sushi

Sushi is my absolute FAVORITE food. I always say I could eat sushi for every meal and never get tired of it. I love trying new rolls I’ve never had before and eating at different sushi places I’ve never tried. Sakura was the first sushi resturaunt I tried in San Marcos and I’ve been hooked ever since. The concept of Sakura is unlike a lot of sushi places because they operate using a conveyor belt.

Sakura is located in a prime spot in San Marcos, not too far from Bobcat Stadium. It is located at 117 Meiners St and it’s about 5 minutes away from campus. The pricing of Sakura is great for college students, because they do ‘all you can eat.’ All you can eat is only $11.99 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and from 5 p.m.-9:30 p.m. it is $15.99. I typically go around lunch time since it is cheaper, and I come with an appetite. With the all you can eat, it’s not only sushi but items such as fried rice, salad, crab rangoon’s, dumplings, soup, and even dessert. The amount of food you can get for $11.99 is a great deal. Here is their website to look more into their menu and pricing. In addition, everytime I have gone the sushi has been freshly made and the quality is great.

Some cons of Sakura would be the price change from lunch to dinner. They still have the same exact food items available the pricing is just different. Another con would be it’s a bit expensive for a college student in comparison to what you could get for one meal somewhere else in San Marcos. Some pros however are their reward program. If you sign up you randomly get texts such as “free soft drink” or “free appetizer” and after a certain amount of times you eat their you get one free all you can eat. Another pro would be the conveyor belt, because you don’t have to wait for your food when you order, it is already available to grab once you sit down. It’s also close to campus, so it’s not far for students.

My reccomendation: The Sex on the Beach Roll. It’s so delicious and I get it every single time! It’s filled with cream cheese and shrimp tempura and topped with crab and spicy mayo.

I hope you enjoyed this post and it gave you a little more info about Sakura. Let me know if you try it out or have any questions. Kendall

Frozen Cave

Frozen Cave is a hidden gem in San Marcos. Not only is it a refreshing treat for a hot day, but it’s also the perfecct place for lounging and hanging out. Frozen Cave is my go-to place for a sweet craving.

Frozen Cave is best known for their frozen yogurt, however they have a wide variety of options on their menu. They have a cereal bar, ice cream, bubble tea, and surprisingly they even have ham and cheese crosiants and grilled cheeses (that are DELICIOUS!) Frozen Cave is in the perfect location. It’s just a quick 30 second walk off campus located at 700 N LBJ Dr. Frozen Cave is also reasonably priced. The yogurt is weighed on the scale and the cost is depending on how much you want. My frozen yogurt typically ranges anywhere from about $3.50-$6.00. The quality is always amazing at Frozen Cave. The toppings that are set out are always fresh and the yogurt is always delicious!

One con that I can think of for Frozen Cave is that it can sometimes be hard to find parking. It’s located in a shopping center that is typically packed with cars. However, the pros definitely out weigh the cons for Frozen Cave. One of the reasons I love Frozen Cave so much is because of the atmosphere. It’s filled with a lot of flexible seating and fun spots. It makes for the perfect hang out with friends, but it’s also a great place to study at. They are also open seven days a week and are open until 11 p.m. every night. It’s the perfecting walking distance for the students who live on campus.

My reccomendation: If I had to reccomend a yogurt flavor mine would always be just plain tart. However, my favorite thing to get from frozen cave is their grilled cheese. It’s absolutely amazing. It’s cheap and different from any other. At Frozen Cave they butter both sides, but then toast it in a waffle maker! You can also add ham if you want. If you are ever craving a grilled cheese this one is delicious!

I hope I’ve helped you find a place for a good treat! Here is Frozen Cave’s facebook page if you are interested in anything else about it. Thanks for reading my posts. Let me know if you try it out 🙂 Until next time, Kendall

Ivar’s River Pub

Ever since the first time I went to Ivar’s, I’ve been hooked. Not only is the view amazing, but the food is just as great. Ivar’s River Pub is a staple here in San Marcos.

Ivar’s is located right off the San Marcos River at 701 Cheatham St. The location of this resturaunt is my absolute favorite because it overlooks the river. This resturant is great to bring your friends or family to if they have never been to San Marcos. It captures the beauty of the city while providing delious food at the same time. They even have tube and paddle board rentals right outside the resturuant. Although the prices have gone up in the past year, it’s still affordable (especially for the quality of the food.) The menu ranges anywhere between appetizers for $7 or an entree for $15. Here is their website and menu that will go more in depth on pricing. They even have homemade barbeque daily where you can get ribs fresh off the smoker. Their style of food is Traditional American and Pub. Everytime I have eaten at Ivar’s I’ve never been dissapointed. The food is always fresh, hot, and satisfying.

Now for some cons of Ivars. One would be that their is often limited parking due to the river goers. However, the last time I went they gave us a parking pass to avoid this issue. In addition, as I mentioned earlier, their menu has changed and the prices have gone up a little. This is upsetting for their loyal customers, however for someone who has never been before this won’t change much. Ivar’s has many pros, including the amazing location. There is nothing more relaxing than enjoying your food as you watch the river flow right next to you. Another pro is that they are open seven days a week.

Brisket Mac & Cheese
Photo: Kendall Pulaski

My reccomendation: THE BRISKET MAC & CHEESE!!! I can’t express how amazing this mac and cheese is. It’s by far one of my favorites and the cooked-in-house brisket makes the dish 10 times better. It gives it a smoky flavor while still being extra cheesy. I reccomend trying this to anyone who has never had Ivar’s before. (You can also put pulled pork on top if you don’t want brisket.)

Ivar’s River Pub is one of my favorite places in San Marcos. I’m so glad I got to tell you all about it and I hope you decide to check it out!

Fuego Tortilla Grill

Fuego Deluxe Breakfast Taco

Fuego Tortilla Grill has been the talk of the town when I’m around my friends, but for some reason I’ve never tried it for myself. I’m a sophomore now at Texas State and my friends were shocked to hear I’ve never had a Fuego taco before, so like all good friends do, they rushed me straight there. I can truly say, now I understand what all the hype was about.

Fuego is located at 913 N Interstate 35 right off the highway. Although it is in no way walking distance from the campus, it would only take about 7 minutes to hop in your car and make it there. In addition, the price point at Fuego is UNBEATABLE! You can get one taco for as low as $1.39 or the most expensive taco for $5.79. Their menu also contains items such as queso, nachos, guacamole, salads, and bowls. They have a wide variety of choices for a very affordable price. Although I’ve only been once, the quality of the food was amazing. It came out quick, hot, and fresh. I loved it!

Now for a few pros and cons for Fuego Tortilla Grill. The major con would be that it is not within walking distance from the campus, so for the students without cars it may be harder to get to. However, a pro to balance that out would be they deliver through Doordash. Some pros of Fuego are that they have a drive thru, which is super nice if you are by yourself or just don’t feel like getting out of the car. Another pro (which is the best for college students) is that it is open 24 hours a day! However, it is closed on Monday’s. Another major pro is that they have a HUGE menu filled with every type of taco you can imagine. I’ll link that here for you to check out.

Good Golly Miss Holly
Photo: Kendall Pulaski

My Reccomendation: Good Golly Miss Holly. This taco was AMAZING! If you are into weird food combos this taco is for you. It’s filled with smoked brisket, mac and cheese, cheddar jack cheese, and topped with Cheetos. Yep. Cheetos. It gives it a crunch and makes it taste just that much better. I even add sour cream on the top of mine, but you can add whatever or leave it as is!

I hope you all enjoyed this post and go check out Fuego Tortilla Grill, because it is a must-try! Make sure to try the Good Golly Miss Holly and let me know how it is. Until next time, Kendall

Gumby’s Pizza

Photo: Kendall Pulaski

Gumby’s Pizza is one of the first places I tried at Texas State and I’ve been ABSOLUTELY hooked ever since. Gumby’s is every college student’s dream! They have delivery, they are open 24 hours, and have affordable prices that fit into a college student’s budget. The atmosphere at Gumby’s Pizza is a relaxed and chill environment and they even have flexible seating with some couches and lounge spots. Whether it’s 2 p.m. or 2 a.m. Gumby’s has you covered.

Now let’s talk about the location. Gumby’s is located at 312 W Hopkins Street, right off the square in Downtown San Marcos. This is a prime location for college students because it is walking distance from the campus and the square. However, if you aren’t in the mood to walk they have delivery ready for you at all hours. The pricing at Gumby’s Pizza is on the lower end. It can range anywhere from a small pizza for $7. 49 to their “Massive” pizza for $18.49. You can check out the pricing more here at their website. The quality of Gumby’s Pizza has never dissapointed me. It is always fresh and hot and worth the money you spend on it.

Now for some pro’s and con’s of Gumby’s. Some pro’s would be prime location, open 24 hours, delivery, and adfordable prices. Some con’s would be the wait time and crowdiness. During Gumby’s prime hours I would expect to wait a little bit as it does get crowded, however it’s worth the wait because the food is fresh and delicious!

My reccomendation: I 100% reccomend Gumby’s Pizza Rolls! (Pictured above) They are SO delicious. They are breadsticks stuffed with pepporoni and mozzarella cheese and coated in a buttery garlic. I dip them in ranch, which makes them even better, but you also have the option of marinara and garlic butter sauce. I get these everytime and they never disappoint!

I hope this helped you learn more about what to expect when going to Gumby’s Pizza and (hopefully) helped you pick where to eat next time you can’t decide. I would love to hear in the comments below if you have tried it and what you reccomend! Until next time, Kendall
